Magazine Cover - 1st Draft

In this post Olly have placed an image of the first draft of our magazine cover along with the inspiration we used to create it. As you can see we added the logo in the same place along with the Oasis part at the top. Another aspect we looked at was highlighting the text in white and making the artist names taller than the other text.
We tested using a white background but it looked quite empty. We used inspiration from our music video of having the coloured smoke bombs in the background as it plays in big part in the video. In feedback we have received people say it makes theres eyes hurt with the mixed colours. However, we were happy with this as our first draft and we will take this feedback onboard when doing the next draft.

Story Board Narration

Location Scout 2

Below are some photographs from the seconed location recce where we will be filming our 'smoke bomb scene'. The first image is of the first location we looked at, we decided this location wouldn't work because there was too many trees and telegraph poles in the area. There was also a road which ran close by the field and as we were using smoke bombs we did not want to alarm any people driving past.

We found a nice secluded area which can be seen in the 2nd to 4th images. Our only query was which way to film. The images demonstrate the different possible areas.

Smoke Bomb Risk Assessment

Halfway Evaluation Feedback

Everyone gave back information and feedback on which parts and aspects of our video we could improve on.
Video - Many people liked our video and said there wasn't much we could do. someone said the shots were a bit similar and we should try and vary this is the rest of the filming. Everyone said they would watch our video again. Also the outfits we have used people liked the look of and the image we have created. The use of the colours in the background and the atmosphere we have made people really enjoyed. furthermore people said the shots were very good persistently and photos we have are good to use. Finally one said that the shots in thew drama studio were too much.

Digi pack - Our digi pack was not completed at this stage so we had a lot of feedback about what we could do and improve upon our digi pack. We have idea that we presented and people agreed with the ideas we had. The logo we put on people liked and was effective.

Website - The photos we used in the website everyone liked and the colours made the page pop. The links we had were hard to read so quite a few people said to change the writing to make them clear for everyone.

Brand image - The group liked the friendly happy vibe we created in our work. Also the group liked how we carried this out through all our platforms. One said we needed to stop swearing. Finally people said again that they liked our suits.

Everyone but 1said they would view our photo again.

Last Chorus Inspiration

Oliver and Nathan discussed how to increase the editing within the video, in the last chorus of the song.

They talked about editing similar to this artwork and like the screenshot from the old students music video.

Dance Studio Risk Assessment

A Hard Days Night - Beatles

This is another idea for our video. We will have use jumping down onto the camera. We also added the though of jumping onto a sofa in our formation. The sofa would be in the middle of a random area such as a field or car park or a road.

Band Meeting - The Road Ahead

We thought we lost our path in the previous few days we got to lesson and decided we was going to scope out what needed doing and get back on the path we needed to be on to achieve our best work again. After this meeting we got straight to work and Avenue are back on track.

White Sheet Scene

Olly and Nathan had a vision of making a short filler shot of the band at a table and then using a white sheet to make change from a nice scene where the band are sitting together to a messed up scene where the band are dancing and singing. In the video i have embedded below, the end result of us filming this sequence is displayed. We do not think we are going to use this footage however for the following reasons...

1. The black wall ruins the effect of the walls.
2. The chairs look like school chairs.
3. There are school related posters on the wall.

Logo Research

Jess Glynnes logo is simple yet beautiful. It is bld and stands out, this is what we want.

Ed Sheeran - Is a simple design with his name and a dog footprint.

1D is a boy band which we can compare to. Their logo is simple aswell yet instantly recognisable.

Tensnake is our original artist.

Blues brothers are a relatable band

Album Cover Ideas

Off the back of our Album Cover inspiration post we have developed a couple of test album covers. We have used the off white background colour with the image and text on top.

We also tried out a third idea with a pattern in the background which didn't work as well. The design didn't work because the pattern made it hard to read the text.

Smoke Scene Inspiration

The crowd and artist involvement in the nightclub parts of Tom Odell's Wrong Crowd video is what i aim to take inspiration from, obviously ours will be out on a field rather than in a nightclub and ours will be more of a low angle with the dancing crowd behind the artists.

Shot List

Close up over shoulder shot of JK writing out the band name and song, spin out transition.

Close up over shoulder shot of JK writing out the band name and song, spin out transition.

Spin up transition (Casey Neistat) to Long/Wide Shot of the desk and subject/artist (JK) in the middle of the street sat at desk, JK’s head comes up once shot is still and starts singing the song:

Sitting at work on a monday morning then stands up and steps over the desk (or flips it?) and starts walking towards camera.

Spreadsheet files and Coffee Pouring Harry walks into frame with spreadsheets and hands them to JK and starts walking with him, Oli walks in also and hands Joe a mug of coffee.

Office work can be so boring JK chucks the coffee and files behind him. Still walking with camera.

But then there's the pressure, I’m under pressure. The trio stop walking, should stop at a midshot of trio shoulders and heads. On the first pressure oli flicks his head to the right and sings that to a new camera shot of him and flicks back to the trio midshot and then on the second pressure Harry flicks his head to the left and sings in his own shot and flicks back.

Casey Flip up transition - now into the Performance part in the drama studio (or other location) with the trio having different coloured hand prints on their faces (colour selection of just those colours on their faces, rest Black and White),

Midshot of trio again of singing, Keyboard starts - Extreme Low angle tilted up to hands playing the chords on a keyboard. High angle of someone hitting a drum on the snare beat.

Deadlines come and deadlines go - girl runs through a wide shot of the group playing instruments, she has a t-shirt on or a sign around her neck that says deadlines on it, maybe dances with JK and leaves when he needs to sing - and there's the pressure.

Casey flip up to a low angle shot tilted hup, wide shot of the guys standing on the mini hills/mounds of dirt (that are hopefully still there, behind the graffiti wall at the Essex Records Office) sing the chorus or next verser - revolution in my head

Red smoke filling background?

Props in this would be a pallet of red paint and a big paint brush, the people on the side can hold one of these things. Close up shots of these things, matching visuals with lyrics. Stand my ground = shot of feet on the ground moving about on the spot or

moving rocks.

Need to fill the little instrumental with something - Close up of certain parts of all the characters, arranging cuff, coming hair, close up on eye, shuffling feet, doing tie up OR this could be like a slow mo dance sequence

New walking tracking shot? Singing the next verse

Hot as fire cold as snow - we should shoot a part all dressed as scientists - lab coats, rubber gloves, goggles, tongs - in the science department, bunson burners and mixing chemicals, something to overlfow would be cool - 3 different colours interchanging, using the clone tool or something

Revolution - Dancing in science room

Revolution two -Sitting at a table (location = Gym) for first round, all smart and nicely laid out, chucks table cloth at camera - editing reverse shot table cloth comes back from camera scene is now messed up, would have to cut away to close ups to then be able to cut back to a performance

MAYBE MAYBE - setting up narrative of going to the field, text message/call, could lower music during this, make a scene?

Spreading the word, whisper shots (Close up), passing word on.

I’m under pressure, pressure (slow bridge) - Big open field red smoke, group of people (maybe about 6), red flag of some kind, baseball bats, cricket bats, longshot walking towards camera - can do cuts to filler shots closer up to feet walking, flags unfurling, bashing bats etc.

There's a revolution in my head x2 --- Dancing and singing on the field with smoke

LAST Chorus - Cut together everything into a mash up chorus from all the locations

Music Video Story Board

This is the storyboard plan for the whole music video.

Album Art Inspiration

Below i have listed three album covers which we are using as inspiration for our own. An aspect of the covers which we like is the simplicity with a block colour theme. The first two covers are of a very similar style with an image on an off-white canvas so it shows up on websites such as iTunes. This is an aspect we are going to include. We also liked the colour scheme of Roy Woods album along with the simplicity. The colour scheme is slightly dark for our band however the theme is something we will consider.

Font Research

These are the options that we have to decide between. The fine but make it quick is going to be our album title. Also the word next to it is the type of font it is.

Shooting Plan

This is a plan for what we want to get filmed next week between 18th and 22nd of October.

MTV Script

Presenter: " Today i am at the school where it all started for the band avenue. Lets go meet the band."

Presenter: "Who are you? Tell people who might not know?"

Presenter: "Avenue is an interesting name, where did it come from?"

Avenue: Anecdote about where they lived. Lead into fan base in Iceland.

Presenter: "How is the music video coming along for your single Pressure?"

Presenter: "What type of visuals are we expecting from the music video which is coming soon?"

Presenter: "Final question. What is with the hats?"

Shooting Schedule

Band Dynamic Inspiration

This is madness - Our House. The persona and the way the band acts is how we want to be. Its a nice and relaxed feel to there work. Also its fun and it looks like they are having a good time. Which makes the audience feel like the whole band us a good group of mates together and it makes it work well in he video. The video isn't serious and it looks like they have just pout it together randomly but this is what makes the video good. This is he sort of feel we want to give across and the theme of our song gives across this feel. When you listen to our song it makes you happy and its far from serious.

This is another Madness video which looks fun and joking. The way someone is sitting in a lock down a river then gets up and walk away with flippers on makes it look funny and feel different. Also the person running away from a Hurst down the road. Which would never happen in real life and therefore gives an unrealistic feel which makes it show the bands persona. The different people in different costume makes the video look like they're actually going to be like that in real life which we want to put across. Also when the band is in all the same outfits and are singing and dancing to each other gives off a happy and fun vibe. This dynamic come across well. The outfits shows they are together as one and no on is above the other so they all dress similar. All the people are singing which doesn't make one person the star. All of them are equal together unlike some other bands

Drama Studio Plan

White t-shirts, jeans, hand prints (red, blue, green),

Break free and lose control - Dance moves, long shot

Different fillers of shit in the scene
Casey flip out for next scene

Science experiment test

This is our sceicne experiment for out sciene room scene. We used baking soda and baking powder. We did a test with both to see what one was more fizzy which would work better. In the actual scene we will use a test tube so the reaction shots upwards out the tube. We added in food colouring to make it a different colour so it was stand out in the shot.

Level 4 Criteria: 32-40 marks

Level 4
The candidate is expected to demonstrate excellence in the creative use of most of the following technical skills:

·         shooting material appropriate to the task set; including controlled use of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot sizes and close attention to mise en scene

·         editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer and making selective and appropriate use of shot transitions, captions and other effects

·         recording and editing sound with images appropriately

·         Where a candidate has worked in a group, an excellent contribution to construction is evident.

Textual Analysis

Sound
The song is very up beat and positive like ours. This gets people singing along and dancing to the lyrics very similar to our songs effect. The genre of the song is Soundtracks. This is much like ours. The beat makes everyone happy and this is what we wanted to portray in the sound. This would of been the most fun to shot as well as you can be spontaneous while dancing to the tune.
Camera
There are many close ups and medium shots of the artist that is singing. The background is blurred and the artist is in main focus. There are many long shots of many different people dancing about in different areas that have colourful backgrounds. The camera stays stable. It may be on a tripod in one position the whole time. The framing and the distance from the dancers is the same each time. In some shots the dancers is more focused on but in other bigger shots with more background in the whole shot is focused. In some shots the camera gets closer just showing from the hips up. Also the camera is fixed to a trolly in one of the shots which gives it a POV feel. There are many different locations used to shot dancers.
Editing
The cuts in this video are very simple and are straight cuts. There are many involved due to the different locations and amount of dancers. The cuts are between mainly the artist and different dancers which are just showing a narrative of people being happy and smiling while dancing to the tune. This is the same foiujd is most music videos. The narractive is more extravagant in music videos rather than the cuts being different as well.
Mise en Scene
The costumes involved are very colourful and fit the feeling of the song. No one is in dull colours Also people are wearing accessories that stand out and make the people pop more. One of the dancers is wearing a old fashioned hat which we want to involve. For example the washing bucket is filled with bright colours of clothes which is not really what the modern day looks like. It mostly dull and dim colours.  The locations involved such as a car wash or a beach hut or a little statue shop on the street. All have bright colours themed around such as yellow and red and baby blue. The store is lit well with the store lights and the packaging around the isle is bright and pops as the main artist is in white.

Music Director - Joseph Kahn

30 Second Breakdown

0-4 Is Tinie Tempah walking through and door and opening it. It is in slow motion. The shot if very dark and you can just see an outline of the singer. There is light coming from the outside directly in front of him. Medium shot/Handheld
4-6 Is a long shot of a road. A car drives out from behind a row of buildings with people in. There are also people standing in the street. The camera then cuts closer to the car. Establishing shot/long shot
6-7 Is a close up slow motion shot of the car where you cam see the main artist. It continues driving round the corner. Medium shot/
7-9 It cuts to a man dancing in bright colours. This has stopped slow motion. Everything around him is also colourful. Long shot.
10-11 Is a low angle shot of peoples dancing in the from then it zooms through to Tinie Tempah where you can now only see peoples legs. Long shot to medium shot/zoom/handheld steady shot
11-13 Is two people dancing go together doing the same dance moves in sync. Medium shot/stable.
13-15 Is a lot of little cuts to different people dancing in the same area the man was. There was people in the background dancing to the tune. Some close ups and medium shots.
15-17 is a medium shot of Tinie tempah singing along sitting on some crates in glasses and bright clothing.
17-18 Is a little cut to a different position of Tinie Tempah singing in the same position.
19-20 Is another straight cut to a person dancing in bright clothes in the same area as before.
20-24 Is a cut to Tinie Tempah sing again and it keeps doing little cuts of people dancing in the same area. Bright clothes and in time with the beat.
24-25 The filming changes place with a women dancing in the main of the shot and a person standing to the side. Everyone is happy and dancing as it fits with the tune.
26-27 Is Tinie Tempah lip syncing again with the lyrics and he is dancing discreetly. He is now standing up in different clothes which are still bright. All the shots of Tinie are mainly on his own creating a star images. In the background it looks like its not very developed area.
27-29 Is a cut of two girls facing the camera dancing in syncs and within this there is a cut to a closer shot of the two at a slightly lower angle.
29-30 It cuts to Tinie singing on his own doing a usain bolt sign as it fits to the lyrics. Also with this it cuts to Tinie standing in front of the girls and people on the side dancing singing along with the lyric. Everyone is in bright clothes and look quite old fashioned.

5th Avenue Risk Assessment 1&2

Song Pitch Feedback

Pressure
This first song is by Tensnake. Its duration is 2 minutes 54 seconds. The feedback we got from this song was very positive. Everyone enjoyed listening to the song when we played it. Everyone started to dance and move with the beat. We were singing alone as we knew the words. The class said the song was different to any other groups choice. Also it as different compared to other music videos we had already seen. The group said it should be colourful and happy. A lot of dancing about. Our teacher said we should look at 70s videos and maybe base our idea around this. Maybe involve us in suits and older style clothing and props. Not edgy though.

Limits Lie
This song is by Jamie T. It duration is 4 minutes and 11 seconds. Everyone again liked this song choice and thought we could make a good video out of it. The song is a lot slower and less happy than pressure. Secondly people said it would of got boring later on in the video as the tempo stays the same throughout the video. People still said the song would of matched our actor by doing many close ups of lip syncing. This  would of looked good. However everyone still had the first song in mind while listening to this one as it is catchy and happy an they enjoyed it more. This song would of been a bit more edgy. More ideas where darker shots with close ups. Also a story being told and cut to in-between the shots of the artist lip syncing. At this stage people where certain we was going to do pressure as the majority preferred that

He is the same
This song is by John Bellion. The duration of the song is 4 minutes and 1 second. The artist is America therefore you can tell this in the lip syncing and the locations we would shoot wouldn't look like was in America and would look very English. Also the lip syncing may of not matched. This song is up beat again and the feedback we got was positive again. Everyone liked each of our choices. This was different again to the other two we had decided. The ideas put forward was a sound board being played with in time with the beats a the start having a dark room with the sound board lighting up and then a silhouette of a hand moving about the board. Also it sounded quite futuristic. Also a split screen when the artists voice is being used for more than one of the sounds. Finally it has swearing involved which the teacher didn't agree with. However we had to decide in the end and everyone was still telling us to do pressure.
